Athens | Birthplace of Democracy

With equal measures of grunge and grace, Athens is a heady mix of history and edginess. Cultural and social life plays out amid, around and in ancient landmarks. The magnificent Acropolis, visible from almost every part of the city, reminds Greeks daily of their heritage and the city’s many transformations.

Although Athenians have endured difficult circumstances since the start of the economic crisis in 2009, the city is undoubtedly on the rise as a global tourism attraction. This creates a lively urban bustle, with Athenians building their own ‘villages’ in the city, especially in open-air restaurants and bars where they linger for hours, while  few kilometres outside Athens, the urban landscape gives way to a unique seaside resort. This gorgeous stretch of coastline with its green-blue water, organized beaches and rocky coves is teeming with five-star resorts, spas, esplanades, marinas, windsurfing and sailing. Combined with the ideal climate, the Athens Riviera makes you feel as if you’re on an endless summer holiday.

One of the positive outcomes of Greece’s economic resession is the vibrant street art culture that has been developed in numerous areas around Athens. If you find yourself around and about the Plaka, wander over to neighboring Monastiraki and Psirri to check it out. For the most brilliant samples though, head to multi-culti Kerameikos district that busts of energy of all types: from high-end restaurants to souvlaki places, contemporary art galleries and the most vigorous nightlife in Athens.
