Paros & Antiparos | White & Blue Serenity

Paros rests nonchalantly in the shadows of the limelight. Its stylish capital, fashionable resort towns and sweet rural villages are all the more charming for their relative lack of crowds and tourist kudos. For holidaymakers looking for Mykonos without the hype and price tag, this might be the spot. But word is spreading. There’s plenty to do, with good walks, plus excellent windsurfing, kite-surfing and diving.

Geologically speaking, Paros has long been a Greek star; white marble drawn from the island’s interior made the island prosperous from the Early Cycladic period onwards. Most famously, the Venus de Milo was carved from Parian marble, as was Napoleon’s tomb.

The smaller island of Antiparos, right next to Paros, is a hidden beauty. Antiparos has transformed into the hit of the Aegean after Tom Hanks and other Hollywood celebrities chose the island as their private retreat, offering a handful of dreamlike turquoise waters along with first class lifestyle, away from the tourists buzz.

Nowadays, 450 churches exist In Paros. Not all of them are open all year long though. The majority has been built by either wealthy Parians who have made a vow or most likely by seamen that have been in danger and eventually saved. Consequently these churches function for about three days around the name-day dedicated to the respective patron Saint or just St. Nicholas, protector of sailors. We are speaking about three days of absolute feast with abundant food and wine offered to everyone. Yámas (cheers)!
