This 540 m2 privately owned villa, built in 1426 and classified as a historical monument by the Greek Archaeological authorities, has a magnificent sea-view, and is situated on a hillside just 8 km from Rethymnon, in an also classified, “heritage site” village.
The front door opens onto an inner large courtyard with a private swimming pool surrounded by potted plants, flowers and elegant garden furniture. This is the place to sunbathe, unwind and relax, or bask in the shade of an Olive tree. But you also have a massive 140m2 roof terrace with loungers, tables, sofa and gazebo. From there you have a superb view of the village, the sea and the surrounding countryside.
The villa consists of two parts. The first one is a two-storey building which was once part of a larger Venetian farmhouse and the second one is a one-storey building that used to be an olive press, originally constructed during the period of Turkish rule. During its recent renovation, the two parts got connected via a modern covered walkway with large glass walls allowing for luminous spaces, and a unified ensemble was created, combining elements of different times and cultures.
A conservatory style entrance leads you into the main living area with its high ceilings, up to 3,6m, and the open-plan design: You will find a huge lounge with a stunning white marble floor, where you can also enjoy your favorite movies on a giant screen rolling down against one of the bay windows, a fully-equipped kitchen and a spacious dining area, a children’s play space, a vaulted television room, and hi-tech office space. The 110m2 open space opens directly on the courtyard with the private swimming pool. The living area also leads out to a small inner courtyard which houses a Jacuzzi.
The villa has in total five bedrooms; one of the two ground-floor bedrooms has an independent entrance.
High surrounding walls offer peace and privacy, yet you are still at the heart of the village where you can enjoy the vivacious, authentic Cretan village atmosphere. At a walking distance you can find three taverns, some cafés, a cheese factory and an herb shop. Guests can also easily find around plenty of possibilities for meals and at 3km away, some of the best beaches on the North coast of the island.
The villa is extremely well equipped to cater for families with babies and small children, supplying plenty of toys and games. With its central heating installations, the open fire place and the possibility of heating the swimming pool, it is perfectly suited to also serve as a winter residence in an island renowned for its agreeable mild climate and numerous natural and cultural wonders.
